Frequently Asked Questions

What is Functional Movement Systems Training?

The goal of Functional Movement Systems training is to improve your body’s movement while lowering your chance of injury. First, we screen you using a testing method called the Functional Movement Screen (FMS). This identifies patterns that indicate asymmetry in the body, inefficient movement and an increased risk of injury. The feedback from this screen allows us to develop a custom exercise program to pinpoint and tackle the root cause of your chronic pain or discomfort, using recognized movement patterns that work several muscle groups at once as you build strength holistically. This brings efficient and healthy movement back to the body—increasing performance and supporting your work, sports and daily activities.

What Does the Functional Movement Screen Involve?

The screening process and initial training will be an hour-long, one-on-one session with your fully-certified FMS coach, who will observe your movement over the motions below to determine your strength, coordination and flexibility and the extent of any existing injuries and movement disfunction. You will leave the first session with a better understanding of how the “root cause” is effecting compensations, as well as an entry level corrective strategy that will include resetting stretches, and a few targeted exercises in a progression that initiates success immediately!

- Deep squat

- Hurdle step

- In-line lunge

- Shoulder mobility

- Trunk stability push up

- Rotary stability

- Hip mobility

What Happens Next?

The information we receive from the FMS screening process allows us to create your custom training plan. After you have been screened, we will start working on some initial corrective exercises for you to start practicing at home. Tailored to your individual needs, this will include specific stretches, light exercise and more challenging moves for you to build up to.

Will I See Overnight Results?

We are happy to say that some clients do experience incredibly fast results, with a reduction in chronic pain or discomfort and the ability to push harder and dig deeper within days. However, in our experience, four to six in-person sessions or more yields the best results.

Is Functional Movement Systems Training for Serious Athletes Only?

This is for anyone and everyone who wants to break the cycle of pain and enhance their lives. From sporting athletes who want to improve their performance and find an edge, for people with an interest in health and fitness, to those who just want to move better and not be in pain. Here at Hold Your Line we see a lot of Maui’s paddlers, surfers, triathletes, runners, golfers, swimmers, people who train Jiu jitsu, you name it. But we also treat people who don’t do any sports at all, clients who do a lot of lifting at work, those who work at a desk and suffer from “tech neck,” and even children.

How Will Functional Movement Systems Training Make Me Feel?

Our mission is to help you feel stronger, healthier, restored and rebooted—with the confidence and freedom of movement you need to enjoy the life, activities and sports you love.

I Suffer from Chronic Pain and I’m Out of Shape, Will I Physically be Able to Do the Exercises?

Yes. After we assess our clients using the Functional Movement Screen, we create a custom exercise plan which works with their individual needs and goals. This takes into consideration existing injuries, pain and fitness levels and ensures that the exercises feel comfortable, restorative and achievable.

Do I Need to Spend a Lot of Money on Home Training Equipment?

Your customized home training plan can be set up with as little as a resistance band, and a lacrosse or massage ball. Many of the Functional Movement Systems exercises actually use your own bodyweight to create resistance while building strength, improving flexibility, balance, and coordination.

Does Functional Movement Systems Complement any Other Therapies?

Absolutely! Pairing Functional Movement Systems training with massage therapy, acupuncture, or Active Release Techniques (A.R.T) sports chiropractic treatment can only assist in helping you to reach your full potential.
